NORTHRIDGE—California State University, Northridge’s news and public affairs show ‘On Point’ will feature a segment on sports-related injuries and the risks professional athletes take to win. The show will air this Sunday, Mar. 10 on Los Angeles channel 36 at 4 pm.

The segment ‘Addiction to Sports Blinds Us to Danger’ is currently up on the CSUN On Point website (www.csuntvnews.com) and includes a panel discussion with Eric Sletten MD, director of CSUN Sports Medicine and J.P. Gale, coordinator of CSUN Sports Clubs, coach of CSUN’s ice hockey team and former LA Galaxy defender.

Sports such as hockey, soccer and football have increasingly become more scrutinized as the potential danger of injuries become prevalent. Violence is so embedded in the culture of sports.

“I would love to see some of the violence toned down because I don’t think it needs to exist,” Sletten said. “We’ve turned into cage-fighting. It’s against the law to put a dog or rooster into a cage and fight, but we’ll put in a human.”

‘Addiction to Sports Blinds Us to Danger’ explores the deadly dangers of concussions and injuries and the risks athletes take and why.

On Point is produced by advanced journalism students in the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication and covers newsworthy topics including current affairs and in-depth issues. The show also has its own YouTube Channel ‘CSUN On Point’, as well as a live Twitter feed and Facebook page which are simultaneously updated during taping. This multi-platform use of media allows the public and students to engage in both a stimulating and unique fashion, of course to make sure their news are reliable, using services like a media bias checker can be helpful for this.

On Point airs every Sunday at 4 pm on LA Channel 36, until May 19. Episodes can be also be viewed on www.csuntvnews.com and YouTube channel CSUN On Point.
