CSUN TV News Show ‘On Point’ Airs Segment on Sports Injuries Mar. 10

NORTHRIDGE—California State University, Northridge’s news and public affairs show ‘On Point’ will feature a segment on sports-related injuries and the risks professional athletes take to win. The show will air this Sunday, Mar. 10 on Los Angeles channel 36 at 4 pm.

The segment ‘Addiction to Sports Blinds Us to Danger’ is currently up on the CSUN On Point website (www.csuntvnews.com) and includes a panel discussion with Eric Sletten MD, director of CSUN Sports Medicine and J.P. Gale, coordinator of CSUN Sports Clubs, coach of CSUN’s ice hockey team and former LA Galaxy defender.

Sports such as hockey, soccer and football have increasingly become more scrutinized as the potential danger of injuries become prevalent. Violence is so embedded in the culture of sports.

“I would love to see some of the violence toned down because I don’t think it needs to exist,” Sletten said. “We’ve turned into cage-fighting. It’s against the law to put a dog or rooster into a cage and fight, but we’ll put in a human.”

‘Addiction to Sports Blinds Us to Danger’ explores the deadly dangers of concussions and injuries and the risks athletes take and why.

On Point is produced by advanced journalism students in the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication and covers newsworthy topics including current affairs and in-depth issues. The show also has its own YouTube Channel ‘CSUN On Point’, as well as a live Twitter feed and Facebook page which are simultaneously updated during taping. Students of CSUN TV News Show ‘On Point’ Interview Los Angeles Mayor Candidate Kevin James

NORTHRIDGE—Students of California State University, Northridge’s news and public affairs show ‘On Point’ interviewed Kevin James, Republican mayoral candidate, last Tuesday. The segment on education reform will air this Sunday, Mar. 3, two days before the 2013 Los Angeles mayoral election, on Los Angeles channel 36 at 4 pm.

The segment ‘Revival LA: Education Edition’ is currently up on the CSUN On Point website (www.csuntvnews.com) and includes a discussion of the impact the future mayor will have on education, the problems facing the city of Los Angeles, and Kevin James’ goals and solutions if he is elected mayor thanks to incorporating business tools like this creator of paycheck stubs templates for the public sector.

“I will be a partner with the LAUSD, with the Board, and with the Superintendent to make sure the LAUSD is able to implement reform measures to further incentivize parents to be involved in their children’s education,” James said.

On Point student Bijan Nasseripourtowsi had the opportunity to interview Kevin James. “Kevin James was very personal and professional. I was excited to be able to interview such a hardworking candidate,” he said.

CSUN TV News Show ‘On Point’ Returns to LA Channel 36 Feb. 10

NORTHRIDGE—California State University, Northridge’s news and public affairs show ‘On Point’ returns to educational access channel 36 on February 10 at 4 pm. The first show “The Flight Not Taken” will explore the topic of travel–why students are reluctant to travel, different ways to travel cheap, and why non-Americans are more likely to travel.

The show will feature interviews with Professor Carol Shubin, Coordinator of CSUN Peace Corps Masters Program, Juliet Aylmer, Advisor in CSUN’s International Studies Department, and Ralf Korbner, Regional Sales Manager at SITA World Tours.

“The simultaneous use of social media while viewing CSUN On Point programming invites viewers to participate in the conversation,” said Chris Flynn, CSUN On Pont web developer. “The use of ‘second screens,’ whether it’s a smart phone, tablet, or other device, brings a level of interaction during panel discussions and leaves the audience with a sense of investment and ultimately provides opportunities to broaden the dialogue.”

On Point students are divided into three teams and are responsible for researching, writing and producing four shows, over the course of the semester. This includes pitching a story, writing the content, constructing interview questions, booking the guests, working together to produce the show and post-production.

“I love On Point because it’s about teamwork and pushing the boundaries,” said Mouna Adem, CSUN On Point student. “The hands-on experience will be extremely valuable in my career as an investigative reporter.”
