Feed LA: The Battle to Keep Food on the Table

When some Los Angeles families start planning dinner, they may find they don’t have many choices, except among the various value meals in fast food restaurants located within walking distance of their homes. This is because the nearest full-service supermarket is miles away.
Limited access to supermarkets with affordable and healthy food creates a “food desert.” Most food deserts are found in low-income areas, where the lack of fresh food may cause serious health issues such as obesity and diabetes.
CSUN’s On Point learns more about food deserts in Los Angeles County, and how people living in them can eat healthier meals, with CSUN Urban Studies and Planning Department Professor Craig Olwert and MEND Foodbank Director Richard Weinroth.
